ACHS Statement Concerning Recent News Story

posted Dec 13, 2010 11:00 AM by Tiffany Brown   [ updated Dec 13, 2010 11:30 AM ]

The Humane Society of Ashland County was given sole custody of numerous cats by
an individual living at 1718 Twp Rd 1153, Ashland, after local fire department and law
officials were called to the scene of a kitchen fire.

The condition of the home and animals, according to law officials, was said to be similar
to those seen on news reports and shows such as “Hoarders.”

The Humane Society of Ashland County and additional volunteers transported the
cats to multiple veterinarians in the area due to the number of animals. Each animal
was individually assessed for disease, health and prognosis. The Humane Society of
Ashland County is not comprised of medical experts and will rely on humane treatment
recommendations for each cat from the veterinarians. All cats are in need of medical
treatment to varying degrees.

The case is under investigation by Ashland County Sheriff Department.

The Humane Society of Ashland County, which operates without a building or
employees, accepted the use of an individual’s heated garage to care for the cats. The cats will
be held by The Humane Society of Ashland County for a period of three months to insure
the cats have made a full and healthy recovery before being adopted to permanent homes.

If you are interested in adopting one of these cats when available, please email your name
and contact information to info@ashlandhumane.org. Cats will posted on Petfinder and
on our Facebook page when available.

Should you be interested in helping care for these cats now, the Humane Society of
Ashland County is in need of the following:
• Volunteers to feed, water, clean cat boxes.
• Kitchen size trash bags
• Purina Cat Chow (dark blue bag)
• Paper Towels
• Med. Size Litter Pans
• Kitchen Dish Gloves
• Litter Scoops
• Cotton Balls
• Odoban
• Old Newspaper to line cages

Please call 419-281-4722 to make arrangements for drop-off of donations. Any monetary
donations may be made via our website (visit our Donate page for Paypal) or to ACHS, PO Box 114, Ashland, OH 44805.
